Medical supplementary substances (Arznei-Ergänzungsstoffe or AEGS) are used for compensating (comp) nutritional deficits that can occur when using certain medica-tions. AEGS® Met comp is recommended as a supplement during a treatment with the oral anti-diabetic medication metformin which is usually used to lower the blood sugar level, but also for treating PCOS or during a cancer therapy.
Metformin is known for several biochemical interactions that do not only have the desired effect on the blood sugar level, but also lead to detrimental side effects. Ex-amples for this are the inhibition of a complex in the mitochondrial respiratory chain and a lower resorption of vitamin B12 with the help of the intrinsic factor. This can lead to a limited energy supply and indirectly cause damage to cell membranes and mitochondria.
Normally, the medication is taken over a long period of time. Due to the biochemical interactions, various deficits in the vitamin supply can occur. AEGS® Met comp balances these deficiencies and can therefore reduce the side effects of taking metformin.
