Selenium, in its different organic and inorganic forms, is a cofactor of enzymes that are for example responsible for the synthesis of thyroid hormones and for detoxification. Moreover, selenium is a component of mitochondrial glutathione peroxidase which protects the mitochondria from being damaged by free radicals and from the consequences of oxidative stress.

Especially people suffering from a high heavy metal load, chronic inflammatory diseases, autoimmune disorders and oxidative stress often have higher selenium requirements.
